In the US there are various names:
German Language Cercle,
Tea Stunde, German Happy Hour, die Gruppe,
and der Stammtisch.
They all have one thing in common:
practicing and enjoying German in an informal setting.
In Germany a Stammtisch is a table reserved for regular customers, designated with a "Stammtisch" sign. More than merely being a piece of furniture, the "Stammtisch" is where a number of German character traits come together in one place: beer drinking, conviviality, and a deeply ingrained penchant for speaking authoritatively on any given subject.
